Each spring, alewives migrate from the ocean to freshwater to spawn, laying eggs in lakes and ponds before returning downstream. Juveniles hatch, grow, and migrate to the ocean by fall. This journey sustains wildlife and is celebrated in Maine’s historic fish runs.

Dip-netting for Alewives in the spring!

Each spring and summer, mackerel migrate in large schools along the coast, following warming waters and abundant food. They feed on small fish and plankton, supporting predators like seabirds, seals, and larger fish. Their arrival marks a peak season for fishing and coastal activity.
